Surgery Update

It turns out that John has a large bilateral inguinal hernia.  He is scheduled for surgery this coming Thursday morning.  John will stay overnight because of his age even though this is usually an outpatient procedure.  Mom and Dad can stay with him.

Sorry for not leaving a note earlier. First off I wanted to say that not only is John doing an amazing job but you two are doing a fabulous job as parents. You two should be very proud of your patience and persistence in going through these early months. Pauline is clearly doing a great job a your Mary Poppins stunt double too! I have no doubt Coble is a bum that just plays with John, gets him upset and hands him off to a relative...but that's his job. We all have roles.

Danielle never had any serious issues as a child but overall, it looks like you are figuring out the key things. Always sleep when he sleeps or you will never get any sleep. The sleep pattern seems pretty normal to me, especially considering his up & downs from reflux and the hernia. Before you know it, he will be pretty content on hanging out for 10-20 min in his exersaucer, Johnny-Jumps-A-Lot or other random "kid corral" while you bother with things like cleaning.

I do not have any experience with the hernia procedure but I agree with the earlier comment about how babies act after coming out of sedation. Danielle had tubes put in her ears and was very angry and difficult to calm down right when she woke up. They warned us about that and we brought every trick we had (toys, bottles, etc.). I do not know what options are available to John when he wakes but they had an additional dose of some pain killer available to us which made all of the difference. That numbed her up just enough to calm down and grab an extra nap. She went right back to being a happy baby after that. Like you said, the doctors and nurses were never concerned during it but it was just hard on us because we were not used to seeing something like that.

Keep up the good work. We would love to swing up to Dallas whenever it is convenient for you all but we also understand if you need peace and quiet, want to keep new germs from entering the house, etc.

Austin is growing, kicking and is looking forward to joining the party. I think I actually heard him say that he wants a matching Dallas Stars sweater but Denise contends he said he wants a Red Wings sweater. Maybe I will just have to hunt down an infant UT hockey sweater instead!

That's the same surgery Peter had. Even though it's a minor surgery, it's still very worrying for the parents. Lots of prayers for peace of mind for you guys.

John will come thru the surgery with flyin' colors, don't you worry! He's a little tyke, but he's proved himself to be quite strong like his parents since the day he was born! :-) Let the docs do their thing and he'll be good as new and happy before you know it. Ya'll are in my daily thoughts and prayers! Take care and hope to talk to ya soon! Love ya'll always -- Cathy
